Manganese Toxicity Causes, Symptoms & Treatments
Manganese Toxicity most often is found in miners who have worked in manganese mines. Without proper protection while working, miners will breathe in manganese dust and very quickly their bodies are exposed to toxic manganese levels. It is also common for welders and workers in the fertilizer, iron and steel industries, pesticides and other chemical industries to breathe in toxic levels of manganese dust or fumes. Unlike asbestos or silicosis exposure, symptoms of manganese toxicity can occur after as little as a few months or years of exposure.
Common symptoms are a mental disorder that includes hallucinations, hyperirritability, difficulty walking and even violent acts. This disorder, often called Manganism, can sometimes be mistaken for schizophrenia. Manganese Toxicity can also cause symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease such as tremors, expressionless face, and difficulty with mobility, as well as psychological problems. Unfortunately, manganese toxicity can cause long term nervous system damage and in addition to the patient being removed completely from the toxic level manganese environment, the patient will probably have to take a drug called L-dopa for the rest of their life. Because the manganese may cause nerve damage in the brain, the treatment has a poor to fair success rate and only partially helps the patient. Although there is no cure for Manganism or Parkinson’s disease, quality of life can be improved by working with your doctor and pursuing all available treatment for the symptoms. Sleep, regular exercise, and yoga with stretching are all simple steps, yet have been shown to help those with Parkinson’s and Manganism.
