Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch Causes, Symptoms, Treatments

Usage of the Ortho Evra birth control patch in certain women can cause blood clots, stroke, heart attack or certain cancers. You may need to speak with an ortho evra lawyer to determine if you qualify to file a lawsuit if you have experienced any of these major side effects. While there is a warning label in place, there was not one when the patch was originally approved for public use by the FDA, only a warning not to smoke while using the Ortho Evra birth control patch or not to use it if you have a history of blood clots, stroke, heart attack or certain cancers. There is also an increased risk for nonfatal clots with the Ortho Evra birth control patch because the body can be exposed to 60% more estrogen than with a birth control pill containing 35 micrograms of estrogen (which is the amount in a typical daily birth control pill).

Women may be at risk for any side effects related to taking an increased amount of estrogen. An increased amount of estrogen can lead to blood clots, which can be in the legs or lungs, or can be in the brain or heart, causing a stroke or heart attack. Symptoms of a stroke can include a sudden onset of the following: weakness, numbness or paralysis of a limb or one side of the body; blurred vision or other vision problems; severe headache; problems understanding, speaking or other confusion; or dizziness, trouble walking, or loss of balance and coordination. Symptoms of a heart attack can be difficulty breathing, pain in the chest that may spread to an arm, sweating, dizziness or blackout, nausea or vomiting, and a fast or irregular heartbeat.

Urgent medical attention should be sought if you think you feel more than one or any of the above symptoms. Treatment for stroke varies depending on what type of stroke you had, the location it occurred in the brain, and how large it is. Doctors can use CT Scans and MRIs to determine this type of information about the stroke, and then will create a treatment plan based on that. Rehabilitation (including physical, speech, and/or occupational therapy) may be needed if there was any brain damage that caused a loss of normal abilities. Immediately seek medical treatment and call 911 if you are even suspicious you are having a heart attack since time is of the essence. Treatments can include, aspirin, nitroglycerine, blood clot dissolving pharmaceuticals, emergency surgery such as angioplasty, stenting, or by-pass.
