Pericardial Mesothelioma is the type of Mesothelioma found in the pericardium or the lining and sac that surround the heart. This Mesothelioma is also less common than Pleural Mesothelioma, but has been found to possibly be caused by severe Pleural Mesothelioma spreading in addition to the initial asbestos exposure. Pericardial Mesothelioma is also determined to be related to longer term asbestos exposure. It may also take longer for the symptoms to show up, maybe even 30 years. The non-specific symptoms can include: chest pain, persistent coughing, palpitations, or shortness of breath. As with the other types of Mesothelioma, if your doctor is familiar with your occupational history, it may aid him/her in a quicker diagnosis.

Pericardial Mesothelioma is also terminal and has similar treatment options as the other types of Mesothelioma. However, surgery is usually not an option for Pericardial Mesothelioma because it is usually too advanced by the time it is diagnosed. While chemotherapy and radiation are the most common treatment options, another is a “fine needle aspiration” that drains excess fluid out of the chest cavity and may quickly relieve some (painful) symptoms of the disease. The appropriate treatment options will be given by your doctor after careful consideration of the stage of the cancer, your age, past medical history, and general medical condition. If you are interested, you should always ask your doctor if there are any alternative treatments or clinical trials available as these may become available or can change as medical technology advances. It is still hoped that a cure will be found one day through these experimental treatment and clinical trial efforts.
